All of the fishing line goes out that little shoot in the back of the boat, which takes about three hours to do. In the lower right hand corner of the screen you see the corner of a silver ramp this is where the line comes back up. The hook gets removed from the fish, the fish is then brought onto the fish table where it is cleaned and dropped into the fish hold which is in the lower center of the image.
The catch is this. Halibut season is only 24 hours long. We work the entire 24 hours and then some It turns out to be about a 40 hour shift with little time for food or rest. When we did eat my skipper would ask, "Hey Michael, do you want a sandwich?" If I said yes, he would stuff the sandwich in my mouth and I would eat it like a dog.
I want you to know that not only were the hours long but these jobs were quite brutal.
